McDonald’s Unveils “McPintxos” in San Sebastián, Immediately Sparks Diplomatic Incident With Every Bar on the Parte Vieja

SAN SEBASTIÁN — In what company executives are calling “a bold celebration of local flavor” and residents are calling “please leave,” McDonald’s has introduced a new regional menu item: McPintxos, miniature fast food bites served on tiny buns, stabbed with cocktail sticks, and priced just low enough to cause existential panic among traditional pintxo bars.

The launch photo shows a gleaming, moody McDonald’s counter styled like an upscale Basque tavern, complete with glass display cases, blackboard signage, suspiciously elegant lighting, and a small carton of apple juice presented with the understated confidence of a regional cider program.

Behind the counter, a plastic jamón hangs from the wall with all the dignity of a prop in a corporate training video, offering diners the comforting illusion that somewhere, somehow, a real pig may once have been consulted.

“This is an exciting opportunity for McDonald’s to grow the business by expanding into the pintxo segment,” said regional innovation executive Brad Calhoun, standing beneath the plastic jamón and pointing to a slide labeled Small Bites, Big Margins. “For years, customers in San Sebastián have enjoyed small, flavorful foods in social settings. Our research suggests they may also enjoy those foods with a QR code, a limited-time dipping sauce, and a collectible box.”

The slogan reads:

“Pequeños por fuera, grandes por dentro.” Small on the outside. Large on the inside.

Local offerings reportedly include:

Big Mac Txiki A tiny Big Mac with regional ambition.

McPollo de Lux Crispy chicken presented with the confidence of fine dining.

Filet-O-Fish con Alioli A maritime compromise that has already angered three fishermen and one aioli purist.

McFlurry de Queso Vasco A dessert described by the company as “inspired by cheesecake” and by local observers as “a matter for the authorities.”

McDonald’s Spain says the McPintxos are “inspired by the convivial energy of San Sebastián,” though critics note that true pintxos traditionally involve craft, local ingredients, and not being guarded by a plastic Happy Meal box.

The most controversial element may be the McPintxos Happy Meal, which comes with fries, apple juice, and collectible figures representing “the flavors of Euskadi,” including a smiling olive, a bottle, a fish, and a small child who appears to have wandered in from a tourism campaign.

Basque culinary authorities have not yet issued a formal response, but witnesses report several chefs staring silently at the photo for a very long time before whispering, “No.”

McDonald’s insists the rollout is only beginning. Sources say the company is already testing McTxakoli, a lightly carbonated green apple soda served in a paper cup “from a dramatic height.”
